A Believer’s Inheritance (Introduction)
In the Webster’s 1828 English Dictionary, we find one of the definitions for the word inheritance is, “To receive by nature from a progenitor. The son inherits the virtues of his father; the daughter inherits the temper of her mother, and children often inherit the constitutional infirmities of their parents.”
As the children of God we inherit certain spiritual attributes and abilities solely because we have become God’s offspring. John 1:12-13 tell us, “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.” 2 Corinthians 5:17 tells us that we are a, “new creature,” as a result of being in Christ. The Holy God of Creation became our Heavenly Father through the blood of His only-begotten Son and the result is that we were made to be brethren with our Lord Jesus Christ!
Hebrews 2:11 For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren,
2 Corinthians 6:18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
Galatians 3:26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
Romans 8:17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
These new attributes and abilities are the result of God’s Spirit moving into our lives through regeneration, or being, “…born… of the Spirit…,” (John 3:3, 5). We become a new creature because God Himself lives within and some natural and wonderful changes begin to take place as the result!
